Song Fight – Monkeys On My Back

October 26th, 2009 2 comments

So I entered this contest…and lost…by ONE! No big deal. It was a lot of fun and congratulations to the winner Berkeley Social Scene. Song Fight has been around for a long time and this was my first entry in it. The object is to write a song with the title that’s given to you. This one was called Monkeys On My Back. It was the first time I think I ever put myself in any kind of pressure to write a song by a deadline and surprised myself that I could do it. The song was written and recorded the night before it was due and I know, it shows. You can call this a demo. A new recording of the song is in the works and will be finished if I ever get my studio painted and setup. I had a song written for the next entry but got into painting the room and didn’t get a chance to record it. Click on the links above to get to the song. I’ll put a direct link here later.

Song #6 – Play Pretend

Holy frijoles! It’s been a long time. Did September even happen this year? No really, did it? I did have some issues with a partially flooded basement where I had my makeshift studio setup. Luckily we were able to save the day and nothing got ruined. I needed to move out of the basement and setup the equipment in cramped quarters so right now it’s hard to get anything done until I rearrange things the way I like them. Comfort is extremely important to me. So what’s the lesson we learned here? If a sump pump has a life expectancy of 2 years, then it has a life expectancy of 2 years! Heed the warning.

I also had in issue with some corrupt tracks on this song. Every time this happened, I had to re-record the same track over again. It happened at least 3 times. My fix to the problem was to save the file to a different file name (Pro Tools). I don’t know why but that seemed to have worked.

Enough of the excuses for now. I wasn’t totally away. I managed to put up a picture of my guitar on the website header and I finally joined the Twitter parade and put that on the site as well. Also, I’m in the process of setting up the songs to appear on bandcamp.com. More to follow on that. Nothing will stop me now!

Finally to the song. Play Pretend is another song written a LONG time ago. I have a lot of these backlog songs. From what I remember, it’s about an outdoor party I attended with some friends and almost the entire song is about overheard conversations and observations. So here is song #6. At the rate I’m going I’ll be finishing off these 100 songs from beyond the grave. Enjoy!
